High-energy laser therapy is an increasingly popular method used in physiotherapy. The treatment is used for similar disease entities as the standard biostimulation laser.
High power laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment. However, through the high power of the unit and incompetent application of the treatment, unwanted side effects can occur. It is therefore extremely important to familiarise yourself with all contraindications and limitations to using the high power laser.

- cancers
- active tuberculosis
- bleeding tendency
- feverish conditions
- pregnancy
- arrhythmia and circulatory insufficiency/circulatory failure
- hypersensitivity to light
- unstable diabetes
- epilepsy
- open wounds
- sensory disturbance at the treatment site
- eye area
- bacterial, viral and fungal diseases
- metallic and electronic implants
High power laser – limitations
It is important to avoid exposing particular areas, such as:
- endocrine glands
- implant sites
- head area in patients with epilepsy
- tattoos
- areas lubricated with ointments, creams, etc.
- areas previously subjected to heat-raising therapy, e.g. diathermy, ultrasound
- epigastric region in women during menstrual bleeding
