The sollux lamp has become an essential piece of equipment for any physical therapy practice. The sollux lamp treatment is preceded by a massage or other physical treatments eg. electrotherapy.
Control group
In 2011, a clinical study was carried out to evaluate the radiation effect of the sollux IR 375 W lamp in the treatment of rheumatic lesions of the hands. The evaluation was conducted using a thermal imaging camera on a group of 34 people. There were 20 women and 14 men in the group. The average age was 56.1 +/- 8.6 years.
Principles
On the day before the treatment patients were informed of the impossibility of:
- drinking coffee, smoking or using other stimulants
- the use of hand ointments
- taking up intense physical activity
- taking part in other physical examinations
- clenching fists and rubbing hands in pockets 15 minutes before the treatment
The course of the study
The treatment was carried out on patients on the inner side of the palm of the selected hand. The sollux lamp was 30 cm away from the treated area, and the therapy lasted 15 minutes. Measurements were taken before treatment, at the first, 5th, 15th, 30th, 45th, 60th and 120th minutes. Measurements were taken for both the treated hand and the other hand of each patient.
Results
The chart below illustrates the result of the research.
The blue line shows changes in the temperature of the treated hand. The red line is the temperature of the opposite hand.
It is clearly visible that the temperature rises very significantly already in the first minute of treatment. Initially it is 31.5ºC, but after one minute it reaches 35ºC. After that, the temperature decreases. The duration of the treatment is 15 minutes. The raised temperature lasts for 120 minutes from the start of the treatment.
Conclusions
The initial temperature on the hand is lower than the commonly known temperature of a healthy person (36.6ºC). This is due to the fact that the hand is the distal (away from the body) part of the body. The therapy resulted in a noticeable increase in temperature. Initially, it was significant and later, after the self-regulatory mechanisms had been triggered, it decreased. The self-regulatory mechanisms caused a dilation of the blood vessels, accompanied by a muscle relaxation effect. This is a very effective introduction to massage, with better circulated tissue being a better conductor of current and ultrasound waves. Using IR irradiation of several hundred watts, we can achieve a good introduction to massage or exercise. It is also possible to increase the depth of effect of other therapies.
