Shockwave therapy in treatment of erectile dysfunction

We have received numerous questions concerning the use of shockwave therapy in treatment of erectile disorder, so as a manufacturer of physiotherapy devices we offer you this brief compilation.

Non-surgical methods

Current non-surgical methods of treatment of erectile dysfunction mainly involve administration of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5 inhibitors) and/or injection of vasodilators into the corpora cavernosa of the penis. These therapies, performed on demand before a sexual intercourse and having a temporary effect, do not change the basic pathophysiology in the mechanism of erection.

Shockwave therapy

A recently developed method of treatment of erectile dysfunction involves the use of Low-Intensity Extracorporeal Shock Waves Therapy (LI-ESWT). Its effects are aimed at restoring the mechanism of spontaneous erection. It causes the formation of new vessels in the tissue with subsequent improvement of blood supply in the area submitted to treatment.
Due to the fact that poor circulation of arterial blood in the corpora cavernosa is one of the principal functional reasons of erectile dysfunction, inducing neovascularization by LI-ESWT type shockwave therapy devices may potentially improve the blood circulation and thus contribute to improvement of the spontaneous erection.

Results

The results of the preclinical and clinical tests [randomized, with double blind trial] conducted worldwide confirmed that in the subjective evaluation of the patients the LI-ESWT causes significant improvement of the hemodynamics, mobility and spontaneous erection. However, it is necessary to conduct further research. As the mechanism of the therapy is based on LI-ESWT type shockwave therapy devices, a new standard of treatment for men with erectile dysfunction may be developed in the near future.
